Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
September 11, 2005“How happy is the blameless Vestal’s lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d”
When I watched the movie I can’t deny that my head hurt too bad, for I kept thinking, this is what soul mates are all about. If there’s anything such as soul mates. And this is what I always hope for, starting each day like there was no yesterday, to be born again each single day. I forget a lot, and maybe thats the problem, while I forget and detach everybody seems to remember and connect.
I think the reason why most of us are unable to forget is because whatever we do we do according to a plan, after throughly thinking about it,we prepare to it even the things we say, we take our time thinking or we simply memorize. Thats why we expect others to be DEAD serious about everything, its because we are.
The older we get the more boring we become. We are told that spontaneity is bad, very bad. And whatever we do or say is always held against us in one way or another.
I don’t buy this…I try but it’s not working for me. I suffer from bad memory, selectively bad memory.

You’ve become a very prolific blogger dear SC
Spontaneity of the spirit is a wonderful quality, but it does not have to translate into rash, unthought-out words. People tend to underestimate the power of their words, whether written or spoken; and a word once spoken is impossible to retrieve!
As we mature and learn through life, the process of evaluating our words gets faster with practice, until it becomes almost spontaneous.

SC, that’s a wonderful movie! I watched it a while ago and totally fell in love with it… These fantasy movies are just totally my cup of tea

Roba, I totally love such movies! makes you wonder
Ziad, I understand your point. I’m not suggesting that we shouldn’t weigh our words or actions but sometimes we’re chained with fear, we over do it and everything becomes tasteless.
You see, say if we spontaneously said or did something wrong so what? if we apologized and it didn’t work we shouldn’t regret it. Because, when things are meant to be they will happen.
Because Clementine and Joel were soul mates they couldn’t forget each other, they went through the brain damage thingie yet when they met again, they said the same, they’ve done the same.
In real life its quite the same. We’re hurt but thats not why we get over people, its because we’re too prideful, we might not forget them not in a life time at least we’re too prideful to go back.
If you give yourself time to evaluate your words or your actions thats not spontaneity. Its not necessarily bad but we over-do it many times that we no longer if we really mean it. We’re merely doing and saying things automatically, as matter of habit.
I for example used to have a problem distinguishing between common gestures of “being nice” and actually being nice genuinely right at that moment…do we want to be nice or we were told we should?
Ask me how am I and I might actually answer that
The girl in the movie was spontenaeous, impulsive and honest with herself as much as she could be, Joel was not. He was just another guy who is afraid to mess up things and fail, then his pride wouldn’t allow him to go back and try to fix it. Sometimes we regret doing or not doing little things.

“Ask me how am I and I might actually answer that” I like that!
).
I’d do it too, but it depends on who’s asking: the more trust I have in the person, the more forthright I am with them (not that I would lie otherwise, just give a short “OK” or “it could be worse”
Being honest with myself and others is one of the foundational rules I try to apply in my life; but I really think it can be done without the “impulsive” part. I guess I’d define spontaneity as impulsiveness with a two-second delay for “proof reading”

Dear SC,
Just one question : Are you the same Suger Cube that we have come to know on Mahjoob.com ? The similarities between your writings here and the other one on Mahjoob is very distinct. Please disregard the question if you feel that you need to be reserved, I’m just curious

“Constantly talking is not necessarily communicating.” Amazing line, possible jab at our chosen online careers as bloggers.
