Iran to weave largest carpet for UAE mosque

LONDON, September 18 (IranMania) - An Iranian firm will weave the world’s largest handmade carpet which when finished is expected to stretch5 , 700square meters (61, 354square feet) and weigh 45 tonnes, the state news agency WAM said.

More than1 , 000Iranian weavers are to toil for a period of two years on the carpet, intended for the mosque of late United Arab Emirates president and founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan in Abu Dhabi, the agency said.

The carpet will be made with 30 tonnes of wool and 15 tonnes of cotton in the eastern Iranian region of Khorassan.

It will be made up of 15 large pieces which will be later stitched together by hand to form the carpet that will cover the floor of the central praying area of the massive mosque.

The Iranian company which was expected to weave the carpet will provide insurance for the carpet for 10 years after production, said WAM.

UAE and Iranian officials signed the agreement for the giant carpet Saturday in Abu Dhabi, the agency said.

Sheikh Zayed was the founding father and head of state of the seven-member UAE federation since its formation in1971 . He died in 2004 and was buried in the courtyard of the Abu Dhabi mosque bearing his name.
